Watercraft Legal Protection cover provides up to £100,000 of legal costs to help you recover losses after a non-fault accident, pursue claims following death or personal injury, resolve disagreements over the supply of goods or services and defend criminal prosecutions.


Legal cover for boating and watercraft enthusiasts. Policy cover is offered alongside or automatically included within a boat insurance policy through a broker or insurer scheme. Elements of the policy are as follows:

Uninsured Loss Recovery & Personal Injury

If you become involved in a waterborne collision which was not your fault, we will help you recover financial losses which are not covered by your primary craft insurance policy. These losses can include:

  • Your craft insurance policy excess.
  • Damage caused to your craft and to any personal property in it.
  • Obtaining compensation for death or bodily injury, plus medical and rehabilitation expenses.
  • The cost of repairing your craft.

Criminal Prosecution Defence

  • If you become involved in an incident relating to the navigation of the craft and are charged with an offence, we will help to defend you.

Contract Dispute

We will help you to pursue or defend your legal rights if you become involved in a dispute relating to a contract you have entered in to for (provided that at least £100 (including VAT) is in dispute):

  • Buying, selling, or hiring goods for private use in connection with the craft.
  • Buying or hiring services for private use in connection with the craft.
  • Buying or selling your craft for private use.

Identity Theft

  • Where you are the victim of identity theft, we will provide practical guidance and costs to restore your identity. We will also pay any fees required in any loan reapplication which had been rejected due your identity being stolen as well as legal costs in defending you against any actions brought against you arising from your identity being stolen.

Personal Legal Advice Helpline

This service provides you with 24-hour access to qualified advisers who can offer you advice on personal legal issues under UK law, including:

  • Your rights and responsibilities when buying or selling craft.
  • What to do if you are involved in a collision.
  • Penalties for offences under the Merchant Shipping Regulations and any possible defence.

Personal Tax Advice Helpline

This service provides you with 24-hour access to qualified advisors who can offer you advice on personal tax issues under UK law, including:

  • What to do if HMRC notify you of an enquiry.
  • Penalties for failing to submit self-assessment tax return on time.

Identity Theft Advice Helpline

This service provides you with 24-hour access to qualified advisers who can give advice and guidance on keeping your identification safe and secure, and tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft.

Counselling Helpline

This service provides you with 24-hour access to qualified counsellors who can give confidential guidance on matters causing stress and anxiety, including bereavement of the psychological effects of being involved in a capsizing.

Limit of Indemnity

£100,000 per claim:

  • Pursue uninsured losses and personal injury claims.

£50,000 per claim:

  • Defence of criminal prosecutions relating to the navigation of the craft only.
  • Contract disputes.

Territorial Limit

For claims arising under section 1 – Uninsured loss recovery and personal injury:

  • The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, the European Union (which for the avoidance of any doubt includes the following islands: the Azores, the Balearics, the Canaries, Corsica, Crete, Madeira, Sardinia, Sicily), Gibraltar, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, Vatican City and waterways connecting any of these countries.

For all other sections:

  • The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.
